Chapter 8

TEAMING UP WITH THE FURNITURE

After we recovered from the shock of having the door slam in our faces, Emma put her finger to her lips and pointed at the keyhole. I waved at her to go ahead, and she knelt down to look through the hole for about two minutes. Then she stood and beckoned to me.

I didn’t see anything at first — just a torch burning on the opposite wall — until a big round shadow passed in front of the torch, and I realized that Ear-with-Legs was out there, too. Then Max tapped me on the shoulder for his turn, and I sat next to Emma with my back to the door. After a minute, Max slumped down beside me. None of us spoke as we stared out at the room. It was exactly like the room we’d looked into a moment ago, except that it seemed dimmer and smaller now that we were trapped in it.

“I don’t like this,” Emma finally whispered. “Why are they guarding us?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “They just like to be bossy?”

Emma frowned. “But that’s not the only weird thing.”

“Yeah,” I said. “There’s also the giant ear, a bunch of rats, and a king who should maybe drink less soda.”

“I didn’t mean that,” Emma said. “Isn’t it weird that the king’s crown looks so much like Lily’s crown? And it sounded like Rhonda knew that, too.”

Now that Emma had brought it up, it did seem weird.

But I had more important things to think about. And once again, I was worried about time. We’d been a couple hours on the boat, and taken another hour to wind up here, and we weren’t much closer to finding Lily.

“Look,” I said. “We came here to find my sister, and I think we should focus on that. So how are we going to get out of this room and start looking for her?”

“We could just walk out,” Max said as he got up.

“Max —” Emma began, but before she could stop him, Max had turned the knob and pushed open the door. In a loud voice he said, “Think I’ll just go for a stroll. Don’t wait up for me.” He took a step into the hall — and then stepped back quickly as the door slammed in his face.

From the other side of the door, one of the rats shouted, “WE WILL BRING YOU A STROLL! HAA!” There was an answering, “HAA!” from the other rat, and then silence.

Max sat down next to us, rubbing his foot where the door had hit it. He muttered, “How are they going to bring me a stroll?”

Now we were definitely trapped, and we all sat quietly for a minute or two, pondering our situation. But I didn’t sit there long before I decided that I couldn’t stay in that room much longer. And not because I was worried about Lily or about how much time had passed.

Apparently Max felt the same way. “Phew-wee!” He stopped rubbing his foot and waved his hand in front of his face.
